The Inspiration: Bianca Jagger

Who can look past the incredible Bianca Jagger for style inspiration? Her choice of dress for her marriage to the fantastic Mick in St Tropez in the spring of 1971 was the embodiment of ‘70’s style. Not only was the hat amazing (and has been dreadfully underused in designs since), the white suit caused a ripple of style trends that lasted decades. Her smoking jacket was made by the genius Yves Saint Laurent, of course; while Mick’s suit was the work of bespoke tailor Tommy Nutter. Her lack of jewellery, bright red nails and long dark hair only caused a stunning contrast to the white, making her the picture of bohemian elegance.

Bianca and Mick were married in a civil ceremony at the St Tropez town hall in which Jagger insisted should be a ‘low key affair’. Nevertheless he chartered a Boeing aeroplane to fly in guests such as Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton and Keith Moon to join the other 200 wedding-goers. After the raging reception, (for Mr, not Mrs as she was pregnant with daughter Jade) they sailed from the seaside town on a private yacht for 10 days sailing around Corsica and Sardinia. Perfect!

This year Caroline Herrera channeled Bianca and brought out her own white pantsuit for her 2013 spring collection. Like the ex Mrs Jagger, her great use of the hat brings a element of drama, femininity and elegance to the straight tailored lines of the suit. If dresses are not your thing, you can easily walk down the aisle in pantsuit style. — Josephine Scandrett
